the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs and to put a point on the
post-Soviet security organization and space security. Both leaders agreed
that Iran has the right to peaceful nuclear energy if they observed the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In their joint declaration, they
reaffirmed their belief that diplomacy, not force, should be used in the
Iranian case.
Last year Iran began work on nuclear research stating that they need energy.
This would be consistent with their economic outlook, although 80-90 percent
of Iranian export revenue is from oil, while they import nearly all of its
gasoline needs, which are heavily subsidized by the government in the amount
of 4 billion last year.
These energy issues are a chronic problem in Iran, especially since Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, the former mayor of Tehran, took office. Since his election in
June 2005, Iran's economic gap has widened. Its on going dispute with the
international community has seen an estimated $50 billion USD leave Iran.
Further on Iran to come.
